Council officers said the bird delayed the demolition of a local theater by 40 days. The delay caused the demolition bill to rise by almost half a million pounds.
A seagull did not want to leave its nest on the roof of a theater in Newport (Wales). Local taxpayers have lost £460,000 after the bird caused delays to a £19.7m project.
Work had to be stopped after a seagull was spotted nesting on the roof of the demolished Newport Center theater in the Welsh city. 40 days passed before she and her chicks flew away. After this, work could continue again, but as a result of the delay, the demolition bill skyrocketed. The project has become more expensive by almost half a million pounds.
Newport City Council says it spent £460,000 on the demolition project last year. Council staff said the delays were caused by the gull's reluctance to leave the nest and additional costs that had to be paid on top of the agreed contract price.
40 days were lost due to a nesting bird.
The publication notes that demolition work on the center in Newport has now been completed, and a new campus for Coleg Gwent College will be built in its place. The Newport Center has hosted many famous musicians, including David Bowie and Elton John, who gave concerts here.
A new entertainment venue will be built on the other side of the River Usk in the city.
