The owner didn’t even wake up: in Norway, a huge ship almost demolished a house on the beach (4 photos)
A 135-metre container ship literally "knocked" on the door of a Trondheim resident. The ship ran completely aground. It ended up in Johan Hellberg's garden, narrowly missing his home.
Johan Hellberg from Byneset, near Trondheim, was asleep when the ship narrowly missed hitting his home at around 5am on 22 May. Hellberg was shocked to see the impressive bow of the container ship NCL Salten towering over his home on the beach.
Helberg only discovered the unexpected visitor when a panicked neighbor, who had been ringing his doorbell many times without success, gave in and called him on the phone. The neighbor saw the ship heading toward his house at high speed.
"The doorbell rang at a time of day when I don't like to open the door," Helberg told reporters.
Rescue crews arrived at around 6:30 a.m. to find the boat, believed to be carrying 16 people, completely grounded.
There were no reports of casualties or oil spills, according to Jonas Andersen of the Norwegian Rescue Service.
"They were a bit surprised when they woke up. They saw the boat against the wall of a house. But there was no damage to the house," said Svein Erik Wagnild, the police district's operations manager.
Helberg and two other residents were forced to leave their homes while police and rescuers worked to figure out what to do with the huge ship stuck in his garden.
A geologist was also monitoring the situation, as the ship's impact with the clay soil caused a landslide about 100 meters wide.
The same ship is known to have run aground three times in the last three years.
Representatives of North Sea Container Line and the police said they would investigate the incident.
