The peacock spider (Maratus volans) is perhaps the only spider species with body extensions that closely resemble insect wings. In fact, these unique flaps earned it the scientific name *volans*, meaning "flying." But as it turns out, these little spiders don't use their "wings" to fly at all…

Meet the peacock spider.





As you can see, this little creature is remarkably tiny.



According to researchers at the Australasian Arachnological Society (or spider enthusiasts, to put it simply), these extra flaps on male peacock spiders are just a flashy way to attract females of their species.



In this respect, these miniature spiders—barely half the size of a fingernail—are no different from actual peacocks, whose males sport vibrant tail feathers for the exact same purpose. The entire courtship ritual transforms into a stunningly bright and beautiful dance.



True to its name…



Despite its tiny size, it is a hunter with exceptional eyesight. It can spot prey from 20 centimeters away—an impressive feat for a creature so small. Its brilliant coloration isn't just ornamental either; it plays a vital role in its survival.



This type of striking visual contrast isn't unique to spiders. Across many species, males display vivid colors while females remain muted and understated. Peacock spiders are primarily native to the Australian states of New South Wales and Queensland. Males feature two rounded flaps on the sides of their abdomen that unfurl during their courtship dance—which is precisely how they earned their name.
