Millionaires won a case in court because of an "unpaid bill" (3 photos)
Millionaire couple Peter and Anne McGuire and their children found themselves at the center of a scandal - they were sued for an alleged "unpaid bill". But when the case was considered, it turned out that they were groundlessly slandered.
Journalists write that the reason for the lawsuit was the McGuires' visit to the pub "The Horse & Jockey" in Northern Ireland. There, the family ordered four steaks of fish and pork, after which, having paid the bill, they left the establishment.
The restaurant later released CCTV footage of the family ordering a meal and leaving without paying the £150 bill. The family's name was splashed across the front pages of popular newspapers and they were shocked at what they were accused of - failing to pay the bill, being drunk and disorderly.
According to one of the sources who is part of the McGeer family, they were "so shocked and so angry that they decided to seek justice". They initially demanded an apology from the restaurant, but it refused and threatened to sue them for failure to pay the bill. To which the McGeer family's lawyers also responded that they were prepared to sue for "damage to reputation and moral damages".
"It later emerged that the family had sued the pub owner and were demanding a public apology and compensation. During the trial, it emerged that the McGuires had indeed paid the bill in full, but the pub worker had forgotten to process the transaction through the till," the journalists wrote.
The pub said the error was caused by an "inexperienced worker" who had accepted the card payment but forgotten to process it through the till. It is known that the case was settled out of court, and the pub management officially apologised for its behaviour and paid the victims £75,000 in compensation.
Later, the media found out that the McGirr family are millionaires and are involved in the construction industry. Their company, McGirr Engineering, produces machines for making blocks for the construction industry, as well as related equipment, which they sell to dozens of countries around the world.
"The McGirrs realized that their reputation had been dealt a significant blow. That is why they had no choice but to file a lawsuit to restore their good name," said a source close to the millionaires.
It is known that the family categorically refuses to comment to journalists on anything regarding this case. Representatives of the owner of the Horse & Jockey pub also declined to comment.
