Major animation studios take content localization seriously: every film, cartoon, or series undergoes tailored adaptation—meaning it isn't just translated, but partially reworked. Without these tweaks, subtle details might confuse or even alienate international audiences.

Here are five popular animated movies whose characters and details look different depending on where you watch them.





1. Zootopia (2016)



In *Zootopia*, one of the news anchors was customized depending on the country. For North America, the news was anchored by Peter Moosebridge (a moose parodying Canadian news presenter Peter Mansbridge). In China, he was replaced with a panda; in Australia and New Zealand, a koala; and in Japan, a tanuki—a raccoon dog that symbolizes good fortune and prosperity in Japanese culture.

2. Inside Out (2015)





In this movie about emotions, the filmmakers modified a scene where the young protagonist is fed vegetables. Specifically for Japan, broccoli was swapped out for green bell peppers. As it turns out, the original joke made no sense to Japanese audiences because kids there actually love broccoli.

3. Monsters University (2013)



In the American version, Randall bakes cupcakes decorated with the words "Be my pal." Animators often replace text like this with universal imagery that audiences around the world can easily understand, rather than translating it for every language.

4. Toy Story 2 (1999)



In the second installment of Pixar's franchise, Buzz Lightyear delivers an inspiring speech to the other toys. In the original version, the American flag flutters behind him while the U.S. national anthem plays. For the international release, the flag was replaced with a spinning globe and accompanied by the "One World Anthem."

5. Planes (2013)



Rochelle, a character from *Planes*, was given 11 different regional variations depending on where the film was released. In Brazil, she was named Carolina; in Germany, Heidi. Each regional version featured a custom paint job matching that country's national flag.
