In February 2024, Lauren Bannon began to notice that she was having a harder time bending her little fingers in the morning and evening. She tested negative for rheumatoid arthritis, a chronic autoimmune disease that affects the joints. Soon after, she began to experience severe stomach pain. In four weeks, she lost 13 pounds.

After testing, she discovered that she had acid reflux. Concerned about her symptoms, Lauren decided to turn to the AI chatbot ChatGPT for help. The 40-year-old woman got a comprehensive answer to her questions.

According to Lauren, the artificial intelligence told her that she may have Hashimoto's disease, an autoimmune disorder in which lymphocytes begin to mistake thyroid cells for pathogens, attacking and destroying them.

In September, despite her doctor's objections, the Northern Ireland native insisted on being tested for the disease. Chat GPT's guess turned out to be correct. The test revealed two small growths in her neck; Bannon was diagnosed with cancer in October.

Lauren says she wouldn't have known about cancer without ChatGPT, and credits AI with saving her life.

The owner of a marketing company in North Carolina, USA, admitted: "I was disappointed in doctors. I felt like they couldn't give an accurate diagnosis and were just trying to prescribe a treatment for any disease just to get the patient out of their office."

"I was so desperate, I needed to figure out what was happening to me."

She turned to ChatGPT, a program she had already used for work.

Lauren says, "I started typing in symptoms related to rheumatoid arthritis, and a message popped up: 'You may have Hashimoto's disease. Ask your doctor to check your thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPO) levels.'"

Doctors said she couldn't have the condition because she had no family history. After the tests, she underwent an ultrasound of her thyroid gland and found two malignant tumors.

Lauren had her thyroid and lymph nodes removed in January of this year.

"The surgeon told me that I was lucky to have been caught early. Without ChatGPT, the cancer could have spread. It saved my life. I just knew that something was wrong with me. I would never have found it without the chatbot. All my tests were perfect. I am lucky to be alive," Bannon concluded.
