The gang stole 24 bags of cash from a local airport while they were being unloaded from an armored truck onto a plane. As they fled, the robbers set fire to the van with the money to attract locals and slow down the police. 
At least 12 suspects arrived in two SUVs, armed, before intercepting the truck parked on the tarmac next to a LATAM Airlines flight to the capital, Bogota.
They stole at least 24 bags full of wads of cash, four of which were later recovered, and fled the airport after a shootout with security guards, breaking through a fence and escaping onto a highway next to the runway.
After reaching an indigenous village, the gang set fire to one of their vehicles, still containing a bag of bills, to distract police.
Surreal footage shows locals rummaging through piles of burnt banknotes on the ground, looking for usable ones.
Authorities have arrested two suspects, but the investigation is ongoing. The armed robbery forced airport authorities to suspend operations for several hours.
The robbery was witnessed by tourists who were in the airport building and on the planes. One of them said that the gang members were driving Toyota Land Cruiser Prado SUVs and that everything happened quickly.
During their escape along National Highway 90, which runs along the coast of northern Colombia, the gangsters poured oil on the asphalt to elude the police motorcycles pursuing them.
It is noteworthy that the Colombian authorities have not yet reported how much money the robbers stole. Journalists assume that several million Colombian pesos.
