One such astounding monsoon manifestation is the reverse waterfall that runs along the Western Ghats of India. Defying the laws of physics, the flow of water rushes upward, ignoring the force of gravity.

A reverse flow is formed when strong monsoon winds push a large volume of water upward. The resulting spray is dense enough to form a kind of small waterfall. And the powerful upward flow creates the effect of water rushing towards the sky.

In India, the most popular place to watch a reverse waterfall is the Naneghat mountain pass, located between the Konkan coast and the Deccan plateau. Tourists flock to the ghat to watch the torrential rains and incredible water phantasmagoria. A couple of dozen kilometers from Nasik, in the small village of Anjaneri, on the way to the peak of Takhuli, there is also an inverted waterfall.

Samrad village in the Sandhan Valley, near Mumbai, also has a reverse waterfall. It is located at an elevation of about 600 meters. Near Pune, at Kawalshet Point, there are a dozen small cascades and a series of reverse waterfalls that strew the greenery, leaving drops on the leaves like shining pearls. The phenomenon has also been recorded near Sinhagad Fort along Malshei Ghat between Kalyan and Ahmednagar in Maharashtra.
