A sea snake from a Danish beach turned out to be a completely different object (5 photos + 1 video)
Beach cleaners were left in shock when they discovered a "large and unusual creature" on a Danish beach. The mysterious 1.5-metre-long object washed up in Dueodde on the southernmost tip of Bornholm.
Experts quickly determined that it was not a sea snake at all. Guess what it is?
It's a humpback whale penis!
On September 16, beach cleaners René Wilsholm, Morten Gebhardt and Kenneth Nielsen were working at a local beach. After spotting the long creature, they contacted local conservation group NaturBornholm, who confirmed its true nature.
It turns out that the penis belongs to a young humpback whale. Experts believe the organ belonged to a whale that washed ashore earlier this year.
The NaturBornholm team plans to conduct further analysis of the organ, but for now it is stored in a freezer.
The humpback whale's penis can be up to 10 feet long and is usually hidden inside a genital slit located close to the belly.
According to the Pacific Whale Foundation, a nonprofit based in Maui, Hawaii, it is rare to see a whale's penis emerge from its genital slit.
The foundation released a video of a humpback whale with its penis protruding. According to experts, this is a "rare and fascinating sight". It is not known who exactly is swimming towards the humpback whale - a male or a female. Perhaps such behavior serves as a threatening display of territoriality.
Humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) reach 17-18 m in length and weigh about 35 tons.
Females make a variety of sounds, but only males sing songs. The song lasts from 6 to 35 minutes and can be repeated for several days.
