Albania is thinking about a government run by artificial intelligence (4 photos)

While the whole world is discussing how artificial intelligence will fire office clerks and designers, Albania has decided to raise the stakes. There, Prime Minister Edi Rama seriously suggested: what if instead of people, a neural network were to be placed in ministerial chairs? And then the country would become the first in the world with a government where neither coffee nor an envelope in a jacket pocket is needed at meetings.

Albania could become the first country in the world where government is partially entrusted to artificial intelligence. The idea was brought up for discussion by Prime Minister Edi Rama, who noted that voters could even “appoint” an AI algorithm to the council of ministers.

The statement was made at a meeting in the city of Berat. Rama emphasized that technology can eliminate many of the country’s systemic problems, including corruption and bureaucratic delays. According to him, artificial intelligence “will not need a salary, will not make mistakes, will not succumb to corruption, and will not stop working.”

According to Politico, the prime minister is considering creating an entire ministry that will function entirely on the basis of AI. Such a step could improve the efficiency of the government and become an experiment at the European level. Political scientists, of course, immediately stirred up. Some say that the idea is revolutionary, others - that it is pure populism.

But, as Anadolu Agency reports, Albania is already actively using digital tools. Artificial intelligence is used to analyze purchases, monitor tax and customs transactions, as well as for surveillance using drones and satellites. These measures are aimed at combating corruption and accelerating integration into the European Union.

The introduction of digital governance is considered as part of preparations for accession to the EU. Rama is confident that technological solutions will help the country adapt to European standards faster.

However, experts warn that the implementation of such initiatives is fraught with difficulties. The main problems include the quality of the source data, the lack of specialists, and the need to create a reliable infrastructure. In addition, it is unclear which processes will be transferred to AI management and how this will affect real political decisions.

Albania is a small Balkan country with a population of about 2.8 million people. It borders Greece and other neighbors, has access to the sea, and is a member of NATO. But most importantly, it has suffered from corruption for decades, which is why the idea of an "AI-based government" sounds especially relevant here.

Despite the skepticism, the initiative has caused a wide resonance in the region. If the plans are implemented, Albania will become the first country where artificial intelligence will officially get a place in the government.

And yet the idea is catchy. Imagine a cabinet of ministers without scandals, absenteeism and behind-the-scenes agreements. No "cousin of the deputy prime minister" or a tender that a neighbor's company accidentally won. Just a neural network that knows that "0" is zero, and not a place for another kickback.
