Elon Musk signs open letter urging stop development of artificial intelligence due to potential risks to humanity. According to Musk, in the near future people are at risk face mortal dangers if they do not take a computer intelligence under control.
CEO of Twitter along with over a thousand other artificial intelligence experts signed an open letter, expressed their concerns that the technology represents a serious threat to human society. The letter calls for an immediate stop "dangerous race" of technological advances.
The letter was published by the non-profit Institute for the Future life. According to experts, its purpose is to warn people about the perceived risk that AI might pose to civilization.
The Future of Life Institute is a non-profit organization funded by the Musk Foundation and the Commitment to Change Foundation, and also the Silicon Valley Community Foundation.
The authors of the letter warn that artificial intelligence in in the near future may cause economic and political shock to humanity. "Artificial intelligence systems, whose intelligence is able to compete with man, can represent serious danger to society and humanity, document. - Powerful artificial intelligence systems to follow develop only when we are sure that their influence will be positive, and the risks will be manageable.”
The letter states that artificial intelligence laboratories intelligence and independent experts should take a break from their work over AI and use it to regulate and create “clear protocols". The authors urge developers to "jointly create and implement a set of common security protocols for advanced design and development of AI, which will be carefully tested and supervised by independent external experts”. Letter proposes suspension for six months of "dangerous race" to develop systems more powerful than the recently released OpenAI GPT-4.
GPT-4 is the next version of ChatGPT technology which, reportedly greatly improves the ability of a chatbot to understand and complete the assigned tasks - from writing an essay to advice on smuggling of prohibited substances.
If these measures are not taken within the stipulated time, the authors state that governments should make their position clear in protection of the security of mankind and to intervene by imposing a temporary ban on rapidly developing technologies and a moratorium on new developments in the field AI.
Musk is not the only famous person to have signed document. Apple co-founders Steve Wozniak and Yoshua Benigo, who called the "godfathers of AI", also put their signatures under letter.
