The carcass of a 10-meter humpback whale washed up on the beach in Long Island (6 photos)
The whale was found around 6:30 a.m., according to the Nassau County Police. Monday morning at Lido Beach, located in Hempstead.
By the time experts arrived on the scene, the whale was already dead, Hempstead Mayor Don Clavin told News 12.
According to Klavin, this is a fairly common phenomenon - in about a month on the Jersey Shore casts seven whales - but in The city of Hempstead hasn't seen anything like this in years.
“This is by far the largest instance of all time,” he noted. “The crews that have been working here for almost two decades have never Haven't seen a whale this big."
According to Klavin, the workers moved the huge creature higher because of the tide.
He later added: “He is 35 feet (about 10 meters) long. To to pull it ashore, a heavy crane had to be used. And the ropes torn because of the tonnage that was required to lift it higher.
Meanwhile, locals flocked to the beach to watch to a giant creature. "I understand that this is the only way to see something like this in your life, but it's also a very sad day, Clavin said. — This whale is dead, and, unfortunately, people will inevitably come to see him."
The city of Hempstead plans to fence off the whale, so that the federal authorities can perform an autopsy as soon as possible and determine the cause of death of the animal. Burying a whale would require coordination of several groups, including the Department of Environmental Protection environment.
