A ship's cook from Nigeria spent three days in a sunken boat at a depth of 30 meters (3 photo)
In May 2013, a boat in the Gulf of Guinea capsized during a storm due to high waves. The vessel sank to a depth of 30 meters. Some of the crew managed to escape after the wreck, but none of them survived. Some were unable to swim to the surface, while others were eaten by sharks.
60 hours after the tragedy, rescuers managed to reach the boat. Inside, they found the only survivor - 29-year-old ship's cook Harrison Okene.
The man said that after the boat capsized, he was unable to get out and instead looked for air pockets. He found a fairly large supply of air in one of the toilets. He spent almost three days there, with only a can of cola and a can of sardines for supplies. He was bitten by crabs, and the mucous membranes on his tongue and throat were covered with ulcers from the salt water. Okene credits his faith for saving him - he prayed and sang hymns for the entire 60 hours, trying to fight off the fear and panic that was creeping up on him. The man knew that in such situations, panic kills and makes you use more oxygen than necessary.
When the divers started shining flashlights in his face, they first thought they had found another body. However, realizing that rescue was near, the man grabbed the rescuer's hand. Okene spent the next three days in a pressure chamber, because a quick return to the surface was dangerous due to the pressure difference.
Okene's story was spread in the media after the incident with the yacht Bayesian, which sank off the coast of Sicily. The yacht belonged to the "British Bill Gates" billionaire Mike Lynch, there were 22 people on board, including 12 guests and 10 crew members.
