Submarine boat and three days at the bottom of the Atlantic (8 photos + 1 video)

A young Nigerian, Harrison Ojegba Okene, worked as a cook on a towing boat. And he couldn’t even imagine that the next regular trip to sea would end with unimaginable trials and the most difficult game of survival for him.

At the end of spring 2013, Jackson 4 was covered by a huge wave. The boat began to sink. The cook was in the shower at the time. Hearing the screams of the crew members and feeling a sharp list, he ran out onto the deck. The boat sank, and very quickly.

Immediately assessing the situation, the cook rushed into the engine room, knowing for sure that there was an air pocket there. There was no time to think and collect things. The guy had only a flashlight, a life jacket and a can of soda with him.

"Jackson 4"

With this modest supply, the 29-year-old cook had to spend three days in water and darkness. He did not yet know that all the other members of the team were no longer alive. 11 men met their deaths in the ocean.

The most terrible realization was the fact that fish and other inhabitants of the depths had already settled on the sunken boat, looking for something to profit from. And the bodies of the dead sailors became lunch for the sea creatures, as evidenced by the nightmarish sounds of food being consumed...

The flashlight quickly ran out. Harrison found himself in pitch darkness, in icy water, only 20 kilometers from the shore. The Nigerian prayed to at least not lose his mind.

The moment of salvation

When South African divers arrived at the crash site, there was no hope of finding anyone alive. They managed to bring four bodies to the surface, when suddenly another dead man patted the rescuer on the shoulder and shouted: “Corpse!”

The poor guy almost had a heart attack. But then for Harrison, whose brain was clouded by the lack of oxygen, this method of attracting attention seemed the only correct one. The cook was wildly afraid that he would not be found and would be abandoned.

With your saviors

It was impossible to immediately raise the victim to the surface. This threatened to cause decompression sickness, which could cause paralysis and even be fatal. The man was therefore taken to a decompression chamber, where he stabilized with his rescuers.

With my wife

The joy of the wife, who by that time had already been informed of her husband’s death, knew no bounds. But even after 10 years, Okene still has nightmares. He dreams that he is again on the boat, in pitch darkness and cold, slowly dying.

Now he's a cook on the shore

It was rumored that the miraculous salvation involved some black magic. Although, of course, this is an amazing mixture of reaction speed, luck and competent analysis. But the 40-year-old cook became an ordinary cook, having spent 72 hours under water and deciding not to tempt fate any more, realizing that the shell might not fall into the same funnel a second time.
