A shark tore off a surfer's leg in Australia (4 photos + 1 video)
On July 23, Kai McKenzie was surfing off the coast of Port Macquarie when he was attacked by a great white shark. The predator tore off the surfer's right leg, but he managed to escape. The victim's limb soon washed up on the beach.
The video shows the 23-year-old Australian paddling towards the shore, with a huge grey fin following him. The athlete managed to fight off the monster before the wave washed him onto the beach. Bystanders rushed to help. Among them was a police officer who was out walking his dog on his day off. He used a leash to apply a makeshift tourniquet to Kai.
Paramedic Kierran Mowbray said the officer stopped the bleeding and saved the surfer's life. He also noted that the victim was calm: "He was completely calm and talked to us. He's just a very brave and courageous man."
While in hospital, Mackenzie addressed his followers: "I had a crazy shark attack a few days ago (biggest shark I've ever seen) that scared the shit out of me."
"It's so great to see so many amazing people supporting me. I have a lot of messages to respond to but I just want to say a huge thank you to everyone for the generous donations on the GoFundMe page. We really appreciate it."
McKenzie has undergone surgery and is in stable condition.
