A student from Taiwan tried to defraud an insurance company. To receive the insurance payment, he sat in a basin of dry ice for 10 hours and lost his legs.
A 24-year-old man went to the hospital with severe frostbite on his legs; the victim claimed that he was injured by falling from a scooter and was very cold while he was lying motionless.
The Taiwan Criminal Investigation Bureau determined that the student had self-inflicted the injuries. In order to receive an insurance payment of 1.2 million dollars, a young man stuck his legs in a bucket of dry ice and sat in it for 10 hours; doctors had to amputate the limbs.
In the weeks leading up to the incident, the Taiwanese resident had taken out 14 insurance policies with different companies and filed eight insurance claims after his injury. During a search of his home, bags of dry ice and a bucket were found.
