17 Photos That Will Stop You in Your Tracks (18 Photos)
History rarely speaks to us directly. More often, it lurks in candid shots, forgotten negatives, and photographs that were never meant to survive.
Nikola Tesla points a miraculous new invention at himself, seeing his own bones projected onto a glowing screen for the first time. Claudia Cardinale flashes a smile on the set of "Popsy Pop," oblivious to the fact that this look would become legendary. And somewhere in Beijing, a camera shutter clicks for the final time on a man who was once worshipped as a living god by millions, only to spend his final days as a humble gardener. We’ve rounded up 17 photographs—each one not just a frozen moment, but a portal to the past. Take your time scrolling through: some are far deeper than they appear, while others are gentler than you could ever imagine.
