Bhopal disaster (28 photos)
Carbide plant in Bhopal, India. A reaction occurred with 42 tons of isocyanate methyl ester, the temperature and pressure rose so much that huge amounts of gas containing isocyanate methyl ester, phosgene, hydrogen cyanide and other chemicals began to escape into the air. A poisonous cloud passed through the neighboring territories, sleeping residents woke up from a feeling of heat in their throats and eyes. As a result, about 4,000 people died in the first hours alone. Over the next few years, the consequences nearly doubled that number to approximately 15,000. A quarter of a century later, thousands of people are still suffering from the consequences of the world's worst man-made disaster and environmental pollution. In 2001, the Union Carbide plant was bought by Dow Chemical, which says the lawsuit was resolved in 1989. The local government has taken responsibility for the cleanup, which is still ongoing.

A subsidiary of the American chemical company Union Carbide was operating the plant at the time of the incident. For decades, survivors have fought to demolish the plant, but their efforts hit a snag when the Union Carbide plant was purchased by Dow Chemical Co. in 2001. The company claims that it is not responsible for the demolition of the plant and liquidation of the consequences of the disaster. (Staffing/Manish Swarup)
