Dancing goats

Why are these goats dancing? Could this really be a feat of training?

No, because these aren't just goats—they are Nachi, or dancing goats, an indigenous breed from Pakistan that is incredibly popular among locals. At goat shows in the country, there is even a separate contest for Nachi goats for the best gait, and the offspring of the winners are extraordinarily expensive.

Offspring? So that means it's hereditary? Yes. This Nachi gait is genetically determined and linked to the unique structure of their joints and shoulder girdle. When walking, their leg joints make a slightly rotating, springy motion, and their high-held head gives their stride a smooth and rhythmic look.

In times immemorial, having originated as a congenital anomaly, this trait appealed so much to people that they began targeted selective breeding to establish the feature across the entire breed. And those traditional goat competitions proved to be the best tool, allowing generations of Pakistanis to select and breed animals with the most beautiful dancing stride.

But how do the goats themselves feel about it? On the whole, just fine. They don't experience any health issues, except perhaps that they can't jump as high as regular goats—not that they really need to, when caring owners pamper them, cherish them, and take them to shows.
