Nine-year-old Lucy Milgrim, who lives in New York State, USA, has sparked widespread online discussion with her weightlifting results. The young girl, who weighs just 60 pounds (about 27 kilograms), lifted a 180-pound weight—roughly 82 kilograms. This means she lifted three times her own body weight.
Unlike typical nine-year-old girls, Lucy shows a strong interest in sports. She trains five times a week and also competes in wrestling. Through the USA Powerlifting organization, she has already set three national records. Recently, she was back in the spotlight after an impressive performance in front of a large crowd of fans.
Last month, Lucy took part in the Arnold Sports Festival in Columbus, Ohio. At just nine years old and weighing 60 pounds, the girl lifted 180 pounds off the ground in a single motion, going viral on social media.
Lucy's father, Brett Milgrim, told People magazine in an interview that his daughter possessed natural strength from early childhood. He noted that Lucy had physical abilities that set her apart from other children. When she was still very young, her parents would work out in the gym, and Lucy tried to imitate them.
“Mom and Dad worked out in the gym. Seeing them do various cool exercises made me want to try too,” Lucy explains.
Her interest in wrestling is also tied to her family. “Since Dad was a wrestling coach, he would take my brother and me to practice. That’s how I got into wrestling,” she added.
However, Lucy’s social media achievements were met with more than just praise. After videos of her lifting three times her own body weight circulated widely, some users expressed concern that such training could negatively impact the child's health.
“The result is impressive, but I’m not sure this is the right decision for a nine-year-old child. Her bones and muscles are still adapting to such loads. I'm worried she might injure herself,” one user wrote.
Another commenter pointed to children’s growth development, emphasizing that heavy weight training can be dangerous. In their view, children whose growth plates have not yet fully formed should approach such activities with extreme caution.
As of now, Lucy Milgrim has not responded to the social media criticism.
