McLaren F1 up for auction, could fetch over $35 million (12 photos)

A 1996 McLaren F1 GTR supercar will go under the hammer at RM Sotheby's. It is unique in its history, paint job, specification, and owner. Due to these factors, experts have preliminarily valued the car at $35 million. If these expectations are met, the supercar will become the most expensive McLaren in history.





The F1 GTR made history by winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans in its debut year, 1995. Only 28 examples were produced, making this model a standout among the supercars. It is also one of two short-tail prototypes and the first of nine built to the 1996 specification. Its BMW V12 engine produces approximately 600 horsepower.

The car features a unique scarlet and yellow paint job in the style of 1990s pop art. It differs from the standard version by a larger front splitter and a lighter magnesium gearbox housing. Combined, these changes reduced weight by 38 kilograms.

Chassis 10R was used by McLaren in qualifying for Le Mans in 1996, although it did not compete in the race itself. The supercar was later converted for road use. In 1999, it was sold to Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason, who remains its sole private owner. The car has suffered several incidents in its history, after which it was meticulously restored to its original specifications.
