In May, Ichikawa police arrested the Americans on suspicion of obstructing zoo operations.
At around 11:00 a.m. local time, a man dressed in a yellow smiley face costume climbed over the fence and entered the macaque enclosure, where he placed a yellow smiley face-shaped stuffed animal against one of the walls. Meanwhile, a second young man filmed the incident.
According to law enforcement, the offenders are students. One is 24 years old, the other is 27.
