On July 15, 1974, an event that will long be remembered by the public occurred on WXLT-TV. Suncoast Digest anchor Christine Chubbuck unexpectedly pulled out a revolver and shot herself in the head during a live broadcast.

Preparation

That morning began as usual – Christine arrived at the WXLT-TV studios, where she hosted her own show. Suncoast Digest, the morning show, featured local celebrities and news reports, mostly about crime. The show's producers were convinced that viewers were interested in learning about the illegal and bloody events that had occurred in Florida in recent days, so they always asked Chubbuck to cover the topic in as much detail as possible.

About a month before the tragedy, the anchor approached her editor with a request to run a segment on the suicide without further explanation. After receiving approval, Christine went to the sheriff. She asked him many questions about the topic. Her main concern was the most effective method of suicide.

Some time later, the anchor told her colleague Rob Smith that she had bought a revolver. She added that she intended to use it to commit suicide. However, the man didn't believe Kristin, dismissing her honest confession as a failed joke...

A Fateful Day

On the morning of July 15th, Kristin was scheduled to read a short news report on the show. A technical glitch occurred during a report about a shooting at a local restaurant. Then the presenter uttered her final words:

"By supporting the network's policy of showing the freshest blood and guts in all its glory, you will be the first viewers to see a suicide attempt live on air."

After finishing her speech, Christine pulled out a revolver, placed it to her right temple, and pulled the trigger. It all happened so quickly and unexpectedly that many of the presenter's colleagues didn't even realize she was dead at first. Cameraman Gene Reed mistook it for a prank and only rushed to her aid when he saw Chubbuck's death throes.

Christine was taken to the hospital, where she died 14 hours later. She thus became the first person in the world whose suicide was captured on video and broadcast live.

Background

During the investigation, law enforcement discovered that Chubbuck had long struggled with depression and had previously attempted suicide. Her mother knew about her suicidal tendencies. She preferred to keep this information secret because she feared Kristin would be fired from her job.

Coworkers also confirmed that Kristin was often depressed. She complained about her lack of a personal life and constantly criticized herself. However, no one who knew Kristin took these problems seriously.

Chubbuck's brother recalled that his sister exhibited many signs of bipolar disorder. However, at that time, this diagnosis wasn't even officially recognized in the psychiatric community.

According to the script...

After the on-air tragedy, show director Mike Simmons looked at Chubbuck's script. It included four short news segments, a final line, and the suicide itself. Furthermore, according to the script, the show was supposed to continue. Christine Chubbuck envisioned the technical director taking over as anchor.

In 2016, a film was released depicting Christine Chubbuck's final weeks and her on-air death. The film was titled "Christine," and starred actress Rebecca Hall. There is also an opinion that the presenter's story formed the basis for the film "Network," which is a satire on American television.
