The incident that occurred on the night of January 7 at Hartsfield-Jackson, the world's busiest airport, nearly ended in tragedy.

A Boeing 767-300ER operated by LATAM Airlines Peru (flight LA2482), en route from Lima, made such a hard landing that not just the "wheels" but all eight main tires on the rear landing gear blew out.

The moment of impact with runway 26R was accompanied by sounds resembling explosions: due to abnormal loading or a malfunction in the automatic braking system, all eight main landing gear tires simultaneously blew out. Eyewitnesses at the airfield reported plumes of smoke and sparks emanating from beneath the fuselage as the aircraft hurtled across the concrete on bare metal wheels at high speed.

The vibrations inside the cabin were so devastating that the lavatory door in the rear of the aircraft was ripped off its hinges, and the ceiling panels were deformed in several places. Passengers described the sensation as an "endless roar," shaking every part of the interior. Despite the chaos in the cabin and the overhead bins opening, the crew managed to keep the aircraft within the runway.

After the plane came to a stop, Atlanta fire crews immediately rushed to the aircraft to cool the hot metal landing gear. Passengers spent about two hours trapped in the aircraft before being evacuated by buses.

No one was injured in the incident, but the Boeing 767 sustained significant damage not only to the undercarriage but also to interior components. The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has already begun decoding the black boxes to determine why Boeing's reliable system suffered such a massive failure.

Boeing remains true to its traditions. The Atlanta incident involving Flight LA2482 was the first major accident of the new year, continuing an alarming series of failures for the American aircraft giant. Throughout 2025, Boeing was plagued by technical failures: from the high-profile Dreamliner crash in India, which claimed the lives of over two hundred people, to hundreds of minor malfunctions worldwide, totaling over 150 in the year (ranging from technical issues in the air to breakdowns on the ground).
