In the US, an animal thought to be extinct in the region was captured on video.
An animal last seen in the region over 200 years ago has been spotted in Cuyahoga County, USA. A fisher marten was captured on camera trap.
These animals were presumed extinct in the 1800s. However, in early December, a fisher marten was spotted in the Cleveland Metroparks Nature Preserve. In the video, the rare animal is seen running through the forest, exploring the surrounding area.
Cleveland Metroparks officials consider the fisher marten's return to the county a testament to the quality of their work. They are working hard to restore forests and waterways and make them habitable again.
The fisher marten, or elk (Pekania pennanti), is a carnivorous mammal of the mustelid family native to North American forests. Despite its name, it rarely feeds on fish. Its favorite prey is wood porcupines, which elks successfully hunt despite their spines.
