Currently, 15% of people aged 30 and over suffer from osteoarthritis. Exercise, weight loss, and physical therapy are traditional treatments. However, they are often ineffective. Current pain relief methods are also limited and short-lived. Brazilian scientists conducted experiments on mice and found that the plant alternanthera littoralis can reduce swelling, inflammation, pain, and stiffness in joints.

The Brazilian plant alternanthera is often found in coastal areas of the country and is traditionally used to treat bacterial, fungal, and parasitic infections.

Experts note that while further clinical trials are needed to confirm its effectiveness for arthritis, the study results are encouraging.

Researchers from the Federal University of Grandes Dourados reported significant anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and anti-arthritic properties of alternanthera in a paper published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology.

They noted: "These data support the traditional use of alternanthera littorali and highlight its potential as a safe and effective treatment for inflammatory conditions."

Osteoarthritis develops when the cartilage of the bones in the joint surfaces deteriorates. This leads to pain, swelling, and difficulty moving due to the friction of bones against each other.

The team conducted a phytochemical analysis of the plant to identify its bioactive compounds—natural substances that are not essential nutrients but have significant effects on living organisms.

The researchers then tested the anti-inflammatory properties of these compounds in laboratory experiments with more than a dozen mice with arthritis.

They collected blood and urine samples for 28 days. This allowed them to assess the effects of Alternanthera on the heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, spleen, and joints.

"In experimental models, we observed reduced swelling, improved joint health, and a reduction in inflammatory mediators. This indicates an antioxidant and tissue-protective effect. While the results are promising, the precise molecular mechanisms are still unclear and require further research to identify and characterize the active compounds."

"Despite the observed pharmacological benefits, a thorough toxicological assessment is necessary before initiating any treatment."

Patients with advanced osteoarthritis are recommended joint replacement. However, surgery requires a long recovery period.

There is no magic diet for treating osteoarthritis, but research shows that omega-3 fatty acids have anti-inflammatory properties.

Also, a Mediterranean diet may help.

In 2016, British scientists conducted a study. They found that participants who followed a specific plan not only lost weight but also reduced inflammation and cartilage damage.

They also experienced improved knee flexibility and hip mobility.
