The Safety of Three Geely, Exlantix, and Chery Crossovers Was Tested Using the European Euro NCAP Method (7 photos)

Three Chinese models of interest to many were recently tested by the independent organization Euro NCAP: the Geely EX5 EM-i hybrid, the premium Exlantix ET, and the budget Chery Tiggo 4 with a gasoline-electric powertrain. Two of the three crossovers earned the maximum five stars in crash tests, while one only scored four stars.

Geely Strarray EM-i (EX5 EM-i)





The names of these crossovers differ slightly in Europe. For example, the Geely EX5 EM-i is sold there as the Strarray EM-i. Euro NCAP experts noted that the model performed excellently in frontal impacts, demonstrating a high level of protection for the driver and front passenger. In the side pole impact, protection was deemed "adequate for all critical body areas." The hybrid's scores were: 90% for driver and passenger protection, 87% for child occupant protection, 86% for pedestrian protection, and 77% for electronic systems. The EX5 EM-i received five stars out of five.

The premium Exlantix ET also earned five stars. The electric version of the model participated in the tests. The electric car's scores are similar to those of the Strarray EM-i: 90% for driver and adult occupant protection and 85% for child occupant protection. The crossover scored 76% in the simulated pedestrian crash and 79% for the safety systems. Euro NCAP noted that the same level of protection would be provided to passengers of different heights.

The Chery Tiggo 4, a plug-in hybrid model sold in Europe as the Ebro s400 HEV, performed weaker in crash tests. Driver and passenger protection was rated at 79%, child protection at 85%, pedestrian protection at 78%, and electronic systems protection at 80%. Driver chest protection was insufficient in several different impact types, and adults are also at risk of serious neck injury in a frontal collision.
