A Stewartsville, Ohio, resident had been rescuing and rehabilitating wild deer for over a decade. On the evening of November 15, 64-year-old Jodi Proger found herself trapped in a pen with an aggressive deer. Her son-in-law discovered the injured woman, attempted to kill the deer, and called the police.
According to Sheriff James Zusak, Proger's son-in-law took a shotgun and attempted to kill the deer to free Jodi. Law enforcement arrived around 11:00 PM and shot the deer.
"Ms. Proger died from her injuries at the scene," the statement said.
Jennifer Bryan, the victim's daughter, said: "I noticed my mom hadn't been online in a while, so I sent my husband to check on her. My heart is broken; I don't know how to cope with this loss."
"My mom knew the risks, but she was happy to take care of these animals," Bryan shared on social media.
A woman obtained all the necessary permits to care for and rehabilitate deer in Ohio. She began this noble endeavor in 2013 after rescuing her beloved companion, Wither.
Proger and Wither became popular online after posting holiday photos. The American woman found her future friend on the highway in 2013. The fawn's mother died in a car accident, so Proger took him in. At the time, there were no suitable shelters in Ohio.
Brian reported that Wither wasn't the one who killed her mother; he was neutered and domesticated.
According to Proger herself, the deer acted like a normal dog.
"He climbs onto the couch, watches TV, and falls asleep," Jodi shared.
According to her obituary, Proger was a passionate animal lover. She loved horseback riding and helping injured animals.
"For many years, Jodi was dedicated to protecting animals and wildlife."
She is survived by her husband, daughter, and three grandchildren. The family has requested donations to local animal shelters in her memory. ![]()
