Emily Houseman had a clear plan for her life: a successful career, marriage, and motherhood. However, at 43, she was forced to turn to a sperm bank, and when she became pregnant, her life hit a rough patch. She spoke openly about how she coped with a blood clot, cancer, and a layoff.

While working as a journalist, Emily didn't notice how quickly time flew by. Not wanting to miss another moment, she turned to a sperm donor and gave birth to a son in May 2025.

The woman dreamed of enjoying motherhood, but life had other plans.

"One crazy, terrible thing after another was happening to me," she shared in an interview with Need To Know.

Emily, from Utah, USA, felt lost before she became pregnant. After numerous unsuccessful dates, she decided to take matters into her own hands.

In April 2024, she decided to undergo IVF to conceive with an anonymous sperm donor.

When the test came back positive, the woman was overjoyed and looking forward to the next chapter of her life.

Already in her third month of pregnancy, she developed a subchorionic hematoma—a collection of blood between the uterine wall and the outer membrane of the fetal egg—which landed her in the hospital. At the same time, she lost her job.

"The ground fell out from under me. But I knew I had to do everything I could to keep the baby. There was no fear—only focus."

Emily gave birth to her son, Ezekiel, in May 2025.

She finally found happiness and believed that the hard times were behind her. But a couple of weeks later, fate dealt her another blow.

The woman began bleeding heavily. It turned out that a blood clot had formed in her uterus, which had to be urgently removed.

"I felt like a bad mother and was worried about being away from my baby. I developed endometritis and a fever. A few months later, I had almost recovered, but after I stopped breastfeeding, one of my breasts remained hard."

The woman was diagnosed with stage IV melanoma with metastases.

"I became hysterical. I thought, 'I finally have the most precious thing—my child—and now it's all over.' I began to feel like I was living the life I'd always dreamed of, despite the chaos and obstacles. And suddenly, it was all taken away from me."

Financially, it was also difficult for the woman. Her benefits ran out a week before Emily's diagnosis, and she was supposed to start looking for a job that same day.

Her friend started a GoFundMe fundraiser to help cover expenses.

Hausman is currently undergoing immunotherapy. She was preparing to begin the second stage, but her kidneys failed.

She added: “I’m staring my own death in the face, and it’s terrifying. Don’t wait for anyone or anything in life. There’s no ‘right time’ to act, only the present. Time flies, and you never know what might happen. I shared my story so I don’t feel so alone.”

“There are good days and bad days, but I try to move forward. Every time I see my baby’s face, I realize how lucky I am. He’s the reason I keep going and moving forward. I never thought my life would end in tragedy. But I also didn’t know how kind people are until I found myself in trouble.”
