A Rare Porsche 911 Turbo Convertible (993) Will Be Auctioned (39 photos)
Iconic Auctioneers will auction off a very rare and little-known 993-generation Porsche 911 Turbo. This model was never officially produced as a convertible, but at the request of Munich dealer Fritz Haberl, the Sonderwunsch division built 14 turbocharged convertibles in 1995. One of these will be available for sale for the first time and is valued between £700,000 and £800,000, or between $940,000 and $1.07 million.
It is generally accepted that the idea for a 911 Turbo with a soft top came to Fritz Haberl in 1994 during the Geneva premiere of the regular 911 Cabriolet (993). The company agreed to the proposal on the condition that the dealer order at least 10 cars. Development of the powertrain for this generation of the 911 Turbo was not yet complete at that time—the premiere would not take place until a year later—so Haberl's Cabriolets were equipped with the existing 3.6-liter flat-six producing 360 horsepower, mated to a five-speed Getrag transmission.
Fritz Haberl secured orders for 14 Porsche convertibles, five of which were right-hand drive. These exclusive convertibles cost almost twice as much as regular open-top 911s, and the high price was also explained by the level of customization of each one: it is claimed that no two cars were identical. One of the right-hand drive sports cars, with an Amaranth Violet exterior and a gray-black interior, originally built for a Hong Kong customer, will be up for auction. To date, the car has covered 13,300 kilometers.
