Volkswagen to export Chinese models

The Chinese car market often serves as a testing ground for global manufacturers, and Volkswagen is now taking that strategy overseas. Models originally developed in partnership with FAW for Chinese buyers will now be delivered to the Middle East. The move marks a departure from the “In China, for China” strategy and signals growing confidence that these cars can win customers in other regions as well.

First models to export

The first models Volkswagen will export from China will be the Magotan and Sagitar sedans. The two models share a lot in common, although the Magotan is considerably longer and is based on the latest generation Volkswagen Passat sold in Europe. Sales of these models will begin in the Middle East in November. They may be sold under the Passat and Jetta names, although this is not yet confirmed.

Along with these sedans, Volkswagen and FAW have confirmed that Jetta-branded models will also be exported at a later stage, with Central Asian countries being the first on the list. Each export model has been modified to meet the requirements of overseas markets, although details on whether Chinese powertrains will be used remain unannounced.

Jetta brand expansion

Volkswagen is not revealing details of its plans, but in late August the company confirmed that the Jetta brand would undergo significant changes. The automaker will introduce four new energy vehicles (NEVs) under the Chinese Jetta brand. All four models will be “targeted at the entry-level market” and, in addition to electrified powertrains, will feature advanced driver assistance systems.

The automaker believes that compact models will account for about half of China’s new energy vehicle market by 2030, with models priced under 100,000 yuan ($14,000) expected to be the most popular. The first of the new electrified Jetta models will arrive in 2026.

The electrification of the Jetta brand is not the only plan of the company. By 2030, the group plans to launch around 50 new energy vehicles in China. Of these, 30 will be battery electric vehicles.

This move by Volkswagen could indicate a change in global strategy, where China is becoming not only a key sales market, but also an important export center. International trade conditions and safety standards of different regions could influence the company's further decisions on adapting models. The success of these cars in new markets could determine future development directions for other manufacturers, which are also considering export opportunities from China.
