New Volkswagen sedans from 10 years ago were found in China (6 photos)
Chinese company Han Chung Classics announced that it has discovered five brand new 2012 Volkswagen Santana sedans in an abandoned warehouse. Cars of this iconic model for the Chinese market have never been registered and have practically no mileage.
All five four-doors have a white body, a fabric interior and a 1.8-liter engine. Judging by the published photos, the cars have never really been used - there are no signs of wear. However, the company does not specify under what circumstances they were discovered.
In the first half of the 1980s, the Volkswagen Santana became one of the models that marked the beginning of the transformation of both the market and the Chinese automobile industry. In 1983, Santana was assembled in China, and it was among the first cars of foreign brands that were able to gain a foothold in the local market through localization. The sedan, based on the second generation VW Passat, quickly became popular due to its reliability and spacious interior among the ordinary population and government services in China and ultimately earned the status of “people's car.”
Volkswagen, with the participation of local specialists, regularly updated the model, but earlier versions of the sedan and station wagon were produced and sold in parallel. The photo shows just the first generation Santana.
It is unknown what fate awaits the found cars. Perhaps they will be sold at auction to some local lovers of rarities or disassembled for spare parts - Han Chung Classics specializes in parts for old Volkswagens.
