Volkswagen to cut electric vehicle production
Carmaker Volkswagen has announced a number of important changes to its electric vehicle strategy:
Changes in production capacity
The slowdown in electric vehicle sales is forcing automakers to reconsider their plans. According to Bloomberg, the first step will be to shut down the Emden plant, where the ID.4 and ID.7 models are produced. This site will be closed for several years, although the exact dates have not yet been determined.
Temporary production halts
A company representative confirmed that production of the Audi Q4 e-tron will be halted for a week from October 6 due to weak demand. Despite some advantages of this model, it is inferior to Chinese competitors in terms of price and quality.
Launch of new models postponed
Volkswagen is also postponing the launch of two key electric vehicles. The ID.Roc, which was due to arrive in the fall of 2029, is now expected only in the summer of 2030. Similar changes apply to the long-awaited ID.Golf. These delays are due not only to falling demand, but also to resource constraints - the company has already cut costs by 15 billion euros by 2024.
Volkswagen's latest decisions reflect broader trends in the electric vehicle market, where many manufacturers are faced with the need to adapt to real demand after a period of over-optimism. The transition to electric vehicles is proving to be more difficult than expected, forcing companies to find a balance between innovation and financial stability.
