Millionaire Joe Grogan died a day after a secret wedding to nurse Lisa Flaherty. The court refused to conduct a re-examination. Relatives disagree and are demanding an investigation.
A scandal has erupted in Ireland over the mysterious death of 75-year-old millionaire farmer Joe Grogan, who died just a day after an unexpected wedding to 50-year-old nurse Lisa Flaherty. The woman is now laying claim to an inheritance worth about 5.5 million euros, including a 220-acre farm.
The wedding took place on April 14, 2023, at Tullamore Registry Office, without the presence of the deceased's relatives. The following day, the man died at home. His family claim they had no knowledge of the affair or plans to marry, and are calling for an investigation into possible wrongdoing.
During a hearing at Offaly County Coroner's Court, the family expressed concern that Joe's body had been embalmed before the post-mortem examination, making it difficult to establish the cause of death. However, the coroner refused to refer the case for further forensic examination and ruled that the death was most likely due to infection.
A prosecutor representing three of the deceased's cousins argued that the failure to prosecute was unfair to the farmer's memory. A lawyer for the deceased's aunt also asked for the case to be referred to prosecutors, saying there were "too many unknowns" about the man's death.
Lisa Flaherty, a mother of three and a caregiver for special needs children, left the courtroom in tears. Her lawyers said she had been "unfairly attacked" by her family during the three-day trial.
They said Grogan had deliberately refused medical attention and made his decision on his own.
Despite calls for a full inquest, the coroner gave a descriptive verdict and expressed condolences to both parties, noting that the case had been extremely difficult and painful.
