A rare 1959 BMW 507 roadster will be put up for auction (25 photos)
In mid-May, a BMW 507 roadster, produced in 1959, will be put up for auction at Mecum. The concern assembled only 252 of these cars in the second half of the 1950s, and the example intended for sale is one of the last - it was produced 242nd. In addition, the roadster is in excellent condition after restoration. 
BMW developed the 507 primarily for the American market on the initiative of the American representative of the brand Max Hoffman. The roadster was based on a modified BMW 503 platform and was equipped with a 3.2-liter V8 with a capacity of about 150 horsepower in combination with a four-speed manual ZF gearbox.
The BMW 507 was conceived as a slightly more affordable alternative to the Mercedes-Benz 300SL. However, production costs turned out to be unexpectedly high, which forced BMW to set a much higher price for the 507 than originally planned. As a result, the model did not find demand, and the project was quickly curtailed.
The example put up for sale was seriously restored in 1991. The declared mileage is just under 10 thousand kilometers, but it is unknown from what point it is counted. It is specified that in 2001, the then owner of the car participated in the BMW Vintage Marathon, the length of which exceeded 5.5 thousand kilometers. The last owner, a collector, has owned the roadster for over 20 years. The car comes with a removable hardtop in the same color as the body and a set of luggage bags.
The auction house does not publish price expectations, but the cost of a BMW 507 often exceeds $2 million.
