Fat ladies and skinny girls: how standards of female beauty have changed over time (12 photos)

17 April 2025

Although it was not always like that. For example, in the Middle Ages, such “beauties” were in fashion that now you can’t look at them without tears.

Female beauty is a flexible concept. Some believe that sometimes, to achieve the ideal, someone just needs an extra glass - with it, any lady suddenly becomes very attractive. Others insist that a girl should be strictly 90-60-90 and have a flawless face shape.

In any case, there is no single standard and never has been. Moreover, it was constantly changing: what seemed beautiful before now seems strange.

Ancient Egypt

At that time, tall, slender brunettes with small breasts, narrow hips and smooth skin were in fashion. At that time, the Egyptians were already using wax for hair removal and a “hairy” lady was clearly not valued in high society.

Ancient Greece

They were really concerned with beauty there. It was the Greeks who came up with the golden ratio, which is also called the “measurable parameter of beauty.” They also loved proportions. For example, the sculptor Polycletus, back in the 5th century BC, indicated that ideally, the head should “occupy” 1/7 of a person’s height, the hands – 1/10, the feet – 1/6, and the center of the body should be at the level of the navel. These standards were also popular in Rome.

Middle Ages

Hundreds of years later, life has changed a lot, and so has beauty. Now, thin women with emaciated faces, high balding foreheads and almost no eyebrows are considered ideal. Now you can see such “beauties” too - in crime chronicles about the arrest of drug addicts.

The Renaissance

The skinny and hunchbacked medieval freaks were replaced by plump ladies, who later became known as “Rubens’ women”. They seem to be created for having children and their whole appearance hints at a good appetite and prosperity.

World War I

In the second half of the 19th century, aristocratic pallor and thinness were again in my life. And when the roaring 20th century arrived, and with it the First World War, all the pallor was quickly forgotten and the most trendy image became that of a strong, hardy woman.

Mid-20th century

After World War II, there was a baby boom and the most charming and attractive woman became a woman with large breasts and curvy hips. At the same time, Marilyn Monroe appeared, whom Americans considered the sex symbol of the generation.

The end of the 20th century - today

Anorexic models have appeared again, this standard was vigorously pushed by various fashion houses, stylists and glossy magazines. The peak of popularity of skinny beauties came in the 1980-1990s.

And what is considered beautiful now?

There is no such standard now - or rather, it has not yet appeared. Judging by the trends and cyclicality, ladies with good shapes will be in trend. Definitely not skinny, but without folds on the sides - by the way, the so-called "body positivity" was also tried to be introduced to the masses, but it did not take root.

It is possible that soon everyone will again begin to admire ladies with Monroe's curves. Although this is not forever, and we will see more than once how skinny girls and women with solid breasts and wasp waists become fashionable.
