Almost completely destroyed by fire, a 1934 Hispano Suiza was sold for more than a new Maybach (11 photos)
An unusual lot was auctioned at the Broad Arrows auction: the object of the auction was a 1934 Hispano Suiza J12 Vanvooren convertible. Despite the fact that last year the car was almost completely destroyed by fire, 224 thousand dollars were paid for the rarity. For comparison, the price of a new Mercedes-Maybach S-Class in the USA starts at 203.5 thousand.
It is generally accepted that between 1931 and 1938, the Hispano Siuza company built only about 120 J12 cars with bodies from various European workshops. This particular example was carefully restored at the time, which brought it several titles at various thematic exhibitions.
At the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance last summer, the convertible took second place in its category, but a few days later burned down along with the trailer in which the car was being transported. Before the fire, the rarity was valued at about $2 million.
Judging by the photographs published by the auction house, the convertible received significant damage. The body iron was damaged, the power unit burned out, and practically nothing remained of the interior. It is currently unknown whether the buyer of the remains plans to invest in the restoration of the car.
This is not the first time that the remains of a car receive a high price tag. The rusty body and some chassis parts of the Ferrari 500 Mondial, which was also in a fire, were sold in 2023 for almost $1.9 million.
