An American swallowed diamond earrings worth $769K stolen from Tiffany & Co (5 photos)
Jaythan Lawrence Gilder, 32, posed as a player representative for the Orlando Magic basketball team to gain access to jewelry at a Tiffany & Co. boutique in Orlando, Florida. The criminal made off with two sets of earrings: a 4.86-carat pair valued at $160,000 and an 8.10-carat pair valued at $609,500.
Guilder was stopped by the Orlando Police Department on Highway 10. He was charged with resisting arrest, but they were unable to find the stolen jewelry and therefore was not charged with theft.
Once in jail, the man suddenly asked the staff if he would be punished for what was in his stomach. Gilder underwent a body scan, during which detectives found foreign objects in his digestive tract.
"These foreign objects are believed to be the stolen Tiffany & Co. earrings. However, they cannot be confirmed until they have passed through Gilder's system," the report states.
A guard heard Gilder say, "I wish I had thrown them out the window."
The thief has 48 outstanding warrants in Colorado and is also accused of robbing another Tiffany & Co. store in Texas in 2022.
