A British Woman Lived in a Hospital for 18 Months and Wasn't Going to Be Discharged (3 Photos)
Jessie, 35, spent 18 months in hospital in Northampton, UK, despite being medically fit to leave. When she was discharged in late April 2023 after treatment for a bacterial infection, she had nowhere to go.
The British woman found herself homeless after the care home she had lived in for the previous nine years no longer met her needs. The patient requires help with self-care and uses a wheelchair. She has also been diagnosed with emotionally unstable personality disorder. So the woman stayed in hospital for 550 days and had no intention of moving until the NHS trust sued her.
After being evicted, Jessie was placed in another care home but is unhappy because she has negative memories of the place.
The woman told the BBC: "I feel very upset, angry and lost. I feel like my mental health and life itself don't matter."
Northamptonshire Council is unable to comment on the situation due to the ongoing police investigation.
Jessie attended the final court hearing. As soon as she entered the courtroom, she complained of feeling unwell and was unable to speak. The judge ruled that she could not stay in hospital.
Jessie was given 24-hour care in one of 120 residential care homes, but she is now suffering from suicidal thoughts because of the "bad things" that have happened in the city.
The Department of Health and Social Services has acknowledged that such situations pose a challenge to the fragile welfare system.
A spokesman for the department said: "This sad incident highlights how our health system is failing and leaving vulnerable people without the support they need."
At the start of this year, almost 13,000 of England's more than 100,000 hospital beds were occupied by people who did not need treatment.
Jessie said she had self-harmed three times since being moved and is now seeking legal representation.
