A strong stream fell on a house after workers accidentally touched a water pipe (2 photos + 1 video)
A home in Edison, New Jersey, faced disaster when a water main burst and a geyser of water shot out onto the front of the home.
The results of the workers' carelessness were staggering: a huge stream of water gushed from the side of the road and crashed onto the front of a corner home. The stream erupted with such force that it spilled over the roof of the two-story building.
The woman who owned the home was too shocked to speak on camera. But neighbors say they were shocked by the intensity of the stream.
"I came out of my house and thought it was a fire because the water was coming up the roof of the house. When I went there, there was a hole in the ground and the water was coming right through the top window," resident Barbara McMahon told the media.
Local firefighters, police and city officials rushed to the scene to shut off the lines, which Mayor Sam Joshi said were owned by Middlesex Water Company.
"The contractor who was doing the work caused the break. Luckily, no one was hurt. I've spoken to the residents, they obviously won't be able to go back to their homes. It's a very unfortunate situation," he said.
The mayor added that about 100 valves had to be closed to stop the breach. Investigators are trying to determine who caused the break, which lasted for several hours before authorities finally shut off the water supply.
Meanwhile, contractors closed off part of the block in an attempt to carry out repairs.
"There were some cable workers digging a hole from one side of the road to the other," another resident, Gobi Penugonda, told the TV station.
