The dog spent more than a week in a closed shipping container without food or water and survived.
The Coast Guard in Houston, Texas, was checking shipping containers at the port when they heard barking. The container was lowered to the ground using a crane. “As soon as I opened it, a little dog’s face stuck out,” said Coast Guard Officer Ryan McMahon. He said the dog, nicknamed Connie the Container, did not seem scared. On the contrary, she was glad of her salvation.
Coast Guard officials determined that Connie spent at least eight days in the container. She was sitting indoors without food or water. As McMahon noted, the dog was dirty and very thin.
Inside the container, in addition to Connie, there were old cars. Cars were transported across the border to be sold for parts. The Coast Guard believes the dog got into one of the vehicles, which was later loaded into a container. “It would have taken at least another week to get to where the dog was traveling on the cargo ship, so a total of two weeks without food or water. I don’t think she would have survived,” McMahon said.

Officers took Connie to an animal shelter where she was examined by specialists. From there, the dog was taken by employees of the charity Forever Changed Animal Rescue. They stated that Connie was underweight. She was also diagnosed with heartworm disease, an infection with a type of parasitic worm. The organization’s employees provide the dog with the necessary medical care and plan to find loving owners for it after recovery.
