Along the Californian highway there is a kind of Jurassic Park made of metal.

Driving along the remote SOCA S-3 highway, you may accidentally come across a horse frozen on the side of the road. Then an elephant emerges from the flat desert landscape. And very close by, a tyrannosaurus rex is grinning in alarm, chasing a saber-toothed tiger.

It's not a mirage, but the work of welding artist Ricardo Breceda, whose sculptures dot the Anza-Borrego Desert, two hours east of San Diego. Dennis Avery, the late owner of Galleta Meadows Estates in Borrego Springs (and heir to the Avery Labels fortune), envisioned adding "free-standing art" to his property with original welded steel sculptures created by the owner of Perris Jurassic Park, artist- welder Ricardo Breceda of Perris, California.

The man came to an unusual hobby, which became a profession, after an accident that forced him to leave his job at a construction site. He made the metal T-rex sculpture for his daughter Lianna after the girl asked for a dinosaur for Christmas after watching Jurassic Park III.

There are over 130 meticulously crafted metal sculptures scattered throughout the small town of Borrego Springs. Elephants, raptors, mammoths, sloths and saber-tooth tigers roam the desert off the Borrego Springs Road north and south of the city itself. From crouching desert tortoises to galloping horses, each rust-colored sculpture is filled with intricate detail, from the curling eyelashes of 10-foot elephants to the sleek metallic fur of equally impressive sloths.

The area is private, but it is not fenced and is always open to the public, including walking, horseback riding, picnicking, photography and cycling.

Metal sculptures are dedicated to different themes. Perhaps the most popular are prehistoric animals, including dinosaurs. Other themes relate to the desert environment in which they are located, such as its inhabitants, including scorpions and bighorn sheep. There is also at least one religious sculpture of a priest. It also has its own dragon, more than 100 meters long, which creates the illusion of moving across the desert sand.
