Wonder Woman from Sydney beat cancer five times, losing 11 organs (4 photos)
Sydney resident Gail Dean, now 72 years old, first heard the fatal diagnosis from doctors at 38 years old. Since then, she has faced malignant tumors in her body five times, but each time she managed to stay alive. It is rightly called a “medical miracle.”
More than three decades have passed since Gail Dean was out shopping with a friend in 1991 when she passed a medical center advertising free mammograms. Gail and her friend decided to take advantage of the opportunity, thinking it "might be fun."
This is how Gail, a single mother with three children, learned that she had a malignant tumor measuring four centimeters in her left breast. This news marked the beginning of her battle with cancer.
The woman recalls that at that moment she was in complete shock - after all, she did not experience any painful symptoms:
“I was 38 years old, I felt good. I have never had serious health problems, but here it is. But that's the nature of cancer. He is cunning."
As a single mother, Gail's first priority was her children. She had someone to try to survive for. A week later she had a mastectomy - removal of her left breast. After the operation, she endured six months of severe chemotherapy, which left her with no hair.
The threat subsided, but Gail continued to question whether she was a “ticking time bomb” and had regular mammograms.
Five years later, in 1996, the cancer returned. This time the tumor was found in the right breast. A week later, Gail had surgery to remove the tumor. After that, she says, she went into fight-cancer mode, an enemy that must be defeated.
Another chemotherapy dealt a very strong blow to the body. In 1999, Gail began to experience vaginal bleeding, and after a visit to the gynecologist, it turned out that she would now have to fight uterine cancer. There was only one way out - removal of the uterus (hysterectomy).
The next 16 years passed without cancer. Gail managed to get married, celebrate the birth of her grandchildren (by the way, she has ten of them) and travel all over the world. It was as if she was catching up and trying to get as much done as possible! And she continued to undergo examinations - every year the worries became less and less, and the words “remission” and “you are cured” became familiar.
Alas, in 2015, during a routine colonoscopy, a malignant tumor the size of a tennis ball was discovered in the pelvis.
Gail underwent both radiation and chemotherapy during what she described as the worst nine weeks of her life. But the treatment gave results. It destroyed the cancer, but damaged internal organs, and also led to the need to wear a colostomy bag (colostomy bag).
Last year, Gail was hospitalized due to a colostomy bag blocking her intestines.
But doctors discovered something else. She had cancer in her left kidney and it had to be removed.
This was already the fifth malignant tumor on the poor woman’s account. During her battle with cancer, Gail lost a lot - she had her breasts, 26 lymph nodes, uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries, gallbladder and left kidney removed.
“Doctors say they have never met anyone who has had five different very serious cancers and survived,” she says.
Gail Dean says her faith, family and positive attitude helped her fight cancer. And she adds that her whole life is gratitude. She also wants people battling cancer to know that it's okay to be angry. That it is not necessary to appear strong and independent. And you need to accept help.
