A resident of Serbia named Dejan Gacic is a man with a big heart. He has been involved in animal rescue and protection for over 20 years. Together with his now deceased mother Svetlana, he first fed stray dogs, and then, in 1997, opened a small shelter.

A resident of Serbia named Dejan Gacic began his journey in rescuing homeless animals more than 20 years ago. She and her now deceased mother Svetlana first did small good deeds in their village of Kumich: they fed stray animals and helped them, and in 1997 they opened a full-fledged shelter “Vuchyak”. After the death of his mother, Deyan continued to work at the orphanage. Now more than a thousand dogs, cats and even wolves live in this shelter, each of which has its own rescue story.

Some of these animals were abandoned on the street, others were brought to the shelter. According to Deyan, most of the dogs were brought by their owners. One day, the villagers even asked Dejan to save a wolf that was living in captivity with a local resident. Dejan bought the wolf for one bottle of liquor and kept it safe in his basement.

“Many dogs are simply thrown out, or left at the shelter gates. We also often get calls when animals are injured or need urgent veterinary care,” the man says.

Dejan's mission is to save every animal in need, providing them with food, shelter, love, safety and veterinary care. The man strives to show everyone how important it is to treat animals with kindness and respect, and tries to find homes for each furry. Unfortunately, according to Dejan, this is very difficult in Serbia - that’s why they are looking for owners for shelter animals in other countries.

Running a shelter is no easy task. Deyan often faces difficulties in the form of large bills and expenses for building winter houses for his charges.

“Unfortunately, in Serbia there is no systematic solution to the problem of stray animals. People who care for such animals take all expenses and responsibility upon themselves, and are most often attacked by the authorities. But we continue to fight so that every animal in need can get help," says Deyan.
