She lost weight and suffered from depression: doctors found a huge hairball in the stomach of a three-year-old girl (3 photos)
In Mexico, surgeons saved a three-year-old girl suffering from Rapunzel syndrome.
The child was admitted to the clinic with a diagnosis of depression and severe anemia. The girl ate her hair uncontrollably, which caused her to go bald, and she often vomited and felt nauseous. She also suffered from abdominal pain and had lost about five kilograms in recent months.
Doctors examined the child and found a huge lump of hair, mucus, and decaying pieces of food in her stomach. They successfully cut it out of the girl's stomach. She soon recovered and went home.
Rapunzel syndrome is a rare condition in which patients who eat their hair develop a lump that completely fills the stomach and enters the intestines. There are fewer than a hundred such cases recorded worldwide.
