“It’s completely safe”: a nuclear battery for a smartphone was invented in China (4 photos)
Designed for 50 years of operation without recharging. And it doesn't even make noise.
The Chinese company Betavolt presented a miniature nuclear battery. Battery dimensions: 15x15x5 mm - smaller than a coin. Holds 63 nuclear isotopes and can operate for 50 years without recharging. Obtains energy from radioactive decay. The resulting heat is converted into electrical energy.
They also assure that the battery is absolutely safe - the smartphone will not glow or generate noise at night, and you can safely carry it in your pocket. It won’t explode, so local Hiroshima is ruled out. And after a period of decay, the battery isotopes will turn into stable and non-radioactive isotopes of copper. No problems for the environment.
The Chinese company uses the nickel-63 isotope as a radioactive source
Now the power of the miracle battery is 100 microwatts, and the voltage is 3 Volts. Next year its power will be increased to 1 watt. As the creators promise, the battery can be used in smartphones, drones, sensors, and pacemakers. Yes, in anything, and it will not freeze or overheat: the battery operating range is from -60°C to 120°C. Can be used in both Yakutia and the Sahara.
The device is being tested and prepared for mass production, the price is still unknown.
If Betavolt engineers do not lie and complete the work, they will make a real revolution in technology and we will immediately step into the 22nd century. Again - if the battery does not cost like the latest fighter jet and is really safe.
But we won’t rush, let the Chinese succeed first.
