Every year, experts count how many coins end up in the Trevi Fountain, which is located in Rome. Last year, employees estimated more than €1.4 million for 2022. This year, tourists poured in €1.6 million, as reported in the newspaper La Gazzettino.
These are hundreds and hundreds of euros, which are collected three or more times a week by special employees, about whom the local police guarding the square are alerted, explained Giustino Trinchia, director of the charity Caritas in Rome.
The money collected from the fountain goes to charity. Before this, they are sent to a warehouse to be washed, sorted and delivered to those in need.
Tourists throw money into the fountain with their backs turned to it. Many believe that this coin will help you find love, attract good luck and allow you to return to Rome again. But besides coins, various things are thrown into the fountain. Among them are false jaws, glasses, crayfish claws and jewelry.
After excluding the cost of managing the collection, which accounts for about 6% of the total, the rest of the money is used to help people in financial difficulties and those suffering from Alzheimer's disease, said Caritas director Giustino Trinchia.
