An Australian woman discovered frightening black growths on the floor during renovation (4 photos)

An Australian woman removed floorboards from her house and was horrified. A woman took to social media for help, trying to figure out why her floor was covered in growths that looked like cobwebs.

The Australian’s publications have baffled experts. The black pattern looks more like a set from Stranger Things.

The homeowner shared the pictures in a local group to see if anyone had experienced a similar phenomenon.

“I’m terrified,” one person wrote.

Users suggested that it could be "mycelium", "slime mold" or "the roots of some tree", but the community could not come to a consensus.

An expert from the State Herbarium in Brisbane said: "This is something new for me too. Definitely doesn't look like a traditional mold. The only thing remotely similar to it is the Armillaria rhizomorphs (honey mushrooms)."

Rhizomorphs are long, cord-like plexuses of mushroom filaments (hyphae), a type of mycelium.

University of Queensland professor Elizabeth Aitken also agreed that the structure was similar to rhizomorphs.

Dr Heike Neumeister-Kemp, chief mycologist and managing director of Mycolab, added: "This is definitely the mycelium of a fungus, most likely a basidiomycete." Fortunately, this species is not dangerous.
