In the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary at the bottom of the lake Huron (USA) found the remains of a sunken sailing ship of the 19th century. It surprisingly well preserved thanks to the icy fresh water of the lake. The ship seemed to be frozen in time.

Early in the morning of September 26, 1894, the crew of a 58-meter barge-schooner Ironton "Ironton" was in a panic. Due to severe storm the wind team was unable to properly set the sails and the ship, deviated from the course, collided with another ship (it was called "Ohio"). Both ships were wrecked in an area known as the Alley shipwrecks." Since then, the remains of the Ironton have been at the bottom Huron, and only recently it was announced that they were found, and in surprisingly good condition.

Lake Huron is one of the North American Great Lakes. The Great Lakes often surprise people unfamiliar with their large waves and endless open waters. The lakes were critical for shipping goods at home and abroad in the 19th century. Unfortunately, huge the number of ships moving along certain routes, sometimes led to clashes, as in the case of Ironton. By the ship the bow was pierced and he began to draw water, like the Titanic. Unfortunately, the crew was unable to detach the lifeboat. two members the crew were able to escape by clinging to the debris floating in the water, the rest - the captain and four more crew members - died. What as for the Ohio, all her sailors made it safely to land.

Over time, the exact location of the wreck was lost. IN In 2017, researchers discovered the remains of "Ohio" and suggested that his comrade in misfortune might be somewhere nearby. In 2019 thanks to the efforts of the Ocean Exploration Trust (these are the people who found "Titanic") and Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary was finally Ironton discovered.

Scientists conducted a study using sonar and remotely controlled vehicle (ROV), and found three masts still standing upright with rigging attached to the spars. Even rescue the boat is still tied to the ship with a rope.

In the future, the wreck site will be marked with a buoy so that divers could safely visit the Ironton and other cargo barges sunk in this area.

Ironton is a special find for historians. "It's hard to name it’s a shipwreck,” says marine reserve manager Jeff Gray. - This is a ship, standing at the bottom, completely intact, and the rescue the boat is literally a moment frozen in time.”
