Zagato Zele: A Tiny 1970s EV (3 Photos)
The boxy two-seater in these photos is the Zagato Zele. It was an unusual departure for the Italian coachbuilder: instead of a sleek, sporty silhouette, they created a stubby urban EV with a tall cabin.
The Zele debuted at the Geneva Motor Show in 1972. According to the Vienna Technical Museum, roughly 500 examples were built between 1974 and 1976. The car featured a fiberglass body mounted over a steel chassis.
The museum's Zele 1000 had a top speed of around 40 km/h (25 mph). Those figures apply strictly to that version, as it is impossible to pinpoint the exact spec of this street-spotted model from photos alone. Still, the underlying concept is instantly recognizable today: a pint-sized electric runabout built for short urban trips.
